The following is the latest schedule for ASBP blood drives at Chillicothe VA:

    • Monday, January 30, 2012

Because of the passing of  Resolution #41 by the American Legion at the August 2009 National Convention, and because the United States is currently in a period of hostilities, The American Legion in Central Ohio (12th District) now actively endorses and supports blood drives that are only given by the Armed Forces Blood Program(ASBP).

Because of its unique basing at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base (WPAFB), the Midwest regional ASBP crew can drive to Columbus in the morning, collect blood, rush it back to WPAFB, immediately process it, and have the product driven across base and immediately flown out priority status to in-theatre operations overseas. As an example, blood collected in the Sunday November 15th blood drive was processed and in-theatre within the next week.

Central Ohio was the very first and remains one of the very few locations in the country where donors of the general public are actively solicited for military blood drives. All blood collected goes straight to the U.S. Armed Forces.

There are mainly two locations in Central Ohip where the ASBP drives to and conducts specially-scheduled blood drives. Both of them are on the east side of Columbus: The U.S. Army Reserve Center (165 N. Yearling Road, Columbus/Whitehall), and the Defense Supply Center Columbus (DSCC, 3900 E. Broad Street, Columbus). Occasionally, an ASBP blood drive is also conducted at the Beightler Armory in Dublin, Ohio, and once in a while at Rickenbacker ANGB.

While the DSCC blood drives are more frequent, they and the semi-annual armory blood drives are geared strictly for the base employees. Access to the supply center itself is controlled through manned security gates, and it is thus harder for members of the general public to get on base to donate. Public access is essentially prohibited at Beightler Armory. In comparison, access to the public to participate at the U.S. Army Reserve Center is open from North Yearling Road, and all potential donors are welcome (although security is still maintained in the building, and on the grounds). Additionally, all potential donors are well fed warm meals, provided by sponsoring American Legion local posts and the MCFSC.

A few times a year, the ASBP arranges with the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Chillicothe, Ohio to hold a blood drive. One of them is always in late August, usually coinciding with the Aaron Reed Memorial Event. They are usually held in the Medical facility's Auditorium from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The American Legion fully endorses and supports these blood drives, because they too are performed by the same Midwest ASBP team out of WPAFB. As with a Columbus drive, this dedicated, regional Dept. of Defense medical crew drives to Chillicothe in the morning, collects blood, rushes it back to WPAFB, immediately processes it, and ships the product across base for immediately priority flight out of the Air Force base to in-theatre operations.
